Below is a 3D model of this bird feeder offering a panoramic 360-degree viewing experience. An animated video is also provided further down in this article. You can view larger images by clicking on the pictures below.
Step 1. Prepare the “Roof” of the Bird Feeder.
Cut two pieces of wood as shown below (labeled “A”) using a miter saw, table saw, band saw, or some other saw. Next, drill four holes halfway into the wood, each with a diameter of 0.5 inches (1.27 cm). These four holes will hold the roof to the square frame. When selecting wood for an outdoor bird feeder, it’s crucial to choose materials that are durable, weather-resistant, and safe for birds. Excellent options include cedar, redwood, cypress, teak, and pine. The bird feeder shown in the images in this article was made from walnut, maple, and mahogany, as it will eventually be placed in a location protected from rain.
Step 2. Prepare the “Frame” of the Bird Feeder.
Cut eight pieces of wood as shown below (labeled “B”) using a miter saw, table saw, band saw, or some other saw. Fasten four of these pieces together to make a square. The square will then be fasten to the roof (Part A) using dowels. Make sure the holes in Part B match the dimensions in Part A. Use waterproof glue to secure the wooden dowels. The dowels will hold the frame and roof of the bird feeder together.
Optionally, consider using a biscuit joint to help fasten the frame together. To create this joint, cut slots into the edges of the two pieces of wood to be joined. Then insert a biscuit into these slots along with some wood glue. This will help create a tight and strong bond between the pieces of wood.
Step 3. Prepare the “Platform” of the Bird Feeder.
Cut one piece of wood as shown below (labeled “C”). Drill several drainage holes in the bottom of the bird feeder to prevent water accumulation in case of rain. This will help keep the birdseed dry and reduce the risk of mold or mildew forming inside the feeder.
Step 4. Prepare the “Seed Retainer” of the Bird Feeder.
Cut one piece of wood as shown below (labeled “D”). This “seed retainer” will be fastened to Part C. The retainer will hold the seeds in place, preventing them from spilling out. This feature ensures that the bird feeder effectively dispenses seeds while minimizing waste and mess.
Step 5. Cut the wooden dowels.
Cut eight piece of wood dowels (labeled “E”). These eight dowels will be used to attach the frame to the roof. Apply a waterproof adhesive to affix the wooden dowels firmly in place. This ensures their stability and longevity, even in outdoor conditions where they might be exposed to moisture.
Cut four piece of wood dowels (labeled “F”). These four wooden dowels will 1) hide the screws used to fasten the platform (Part D) to the frame, and 2) provide a perch for birds to rest on while eating. Use a waterproof wood glue to fasten the wooden dowels.
Step 6. Paint or finish the wood on your bird feeder.
Optionally, paint or finish the wood. In my case, I applied a linseed-oil. This finish helps accentuate the grain and makes the wood more resistant to damage.
