Pickleball Court Size Overview

A standard pickleball court measures 20 feet wide by 44 feet long for both singles and doubles play. This size remains consistent regardless of how many players are on the court, which makes court setup simpler than other sports that require different layouts. The compact size also makes pickleball accessible in a variety of locations, from driveways and cul-de-sacs to gyms and tennis court overlays.

Key Court Areas and Markings

Within these dimensions, the court is divided into several key areas. Each side features a 7-foot non-volley zone—commonly known as “the kitchen”—closest to the net. Beyond that are the service courts, which are each 10 feet wide and 15 feet long, split into left and right sections by a centerline. The net stretches across the width of the court and is 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches high in the center.

Net Placement and Surrounding Space

Proper net placement is crucial for regulation play. The net should run straight across the center of the court, with posts placed outside the sidelines to avoid interference. In addition to the court itself, it’s recommended to allow for at least 10 feet of clearance on either end and 5 feet on the sides, creating a total playing area of 30 feet by 60 feet. This buffer zone allows players to move safely during fast-paced rallies.

Adaptability and Court Conversions

Pickleball’s smaller court size makes it easy to convert existing spaces, like tennis or badminton courts, into multi-use areas. Many facilities add pickleball lines over existing tennis courts using tape or blended paint. Whether you’re building a court from scratch or just marking off temporary lines, understanding the official dimensions helps ensure a consistent playing experience and keeps the game fair for everyone.
